Biography

Nederlandse biografie

English biography

Fernando Lameirinhas, gifted composer and lyricist, and as a compelling singer and guitar player one of the icons of world music in the Netherlands, was born in Porto, Portugal, in 1944. In his early years he lived in the countryside for several years, in Trás Os Montes and Viana do Castelo, where his passion for music was stirred by the church organ, and where he also sang in the church choir.

In 1959 the family moved to Charleroi, Belgium, because father Lameirinhas, suspected of leftist sympathies, had to flee the Salazar regime. Here, Fernando and his three years younger brother Antonio, who to this day still supports him as bassist and vocalist, began their musical education. Here also he came into contact with various other cultures, which would have a profound influence on his development. These dualities, between rural and city life, and between being Portuguese but living somewhere else, define his personality and his work.

Between 1966 and 1970 the Lameirinhas brothers were very successful, abroad as well, as the soul duo Jess & James. They scored two hits: Move (1967) and Something for Nothing (1968). In time, they got into a rut, and after a period of busking in London Fernando rediscovered his Portuguese roots, also thanks to Brazilian artists such as Novos Baianos, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso.

In 1975, he moved to Amsterdam, where from 1976 to 1980 Toni and he formed part of the cooperative ensemble Sail/Joia, house band of the Melkweg (Milky Way) and Kosmos venues, and an exuberant live sensation that became well-known with the song Amsterdão. After three studio LP’s and a live album, the combination was dissolved, and records were released by Fernando’s Ginga (1981) and Joia, (1982-1988), the group in which the brothers involved great jazz musicians such as Sean Bergin, Michael Moore and Franky Douglas. The one-off project Oxalá (1992) signaled the start of Fernando’s solo career; the constant journey forward which had dominated his life and career thus far was combined with looking back.

From Lagrimas E Risos (1993) onwards, Lameirinhas mature style had taken shape: a personal approach to fado, mixed with samba, chorinho, Cape Verdean morna, jazz and pop –  passionate, melancholy and swinging. Saudade, nostalgia, is never far away, but ultimately your home is in your heart. Because he dislikes boundaries, which he regards as cages, he also regularly works with musicians from other genres and cultures, such as Raymond van het Groenewoud, Frank Boeijen, Henny Vrienten, Bløf, Paul de Leeuw (with whom he released the 1999 single Naar het Zuiden, Southward), Madagascan singer-accordion player Régis Gizavo, Cape Verdean singer Dina Medina, Hindustani Dhroeh Nankoe, Trijntje Oosterhuis and Stef Bos (see the list of programs and collaborations).

In 2005 Fernando and Antonio had been in the music business for forty years, which was celebrated with a concert at the Carré Theatre in Amsterdam, preserved for posterity on the DVD Meu Fado – Live in Carré. The CD Anaïna came out in 2007 and features two Dutch-language duets with Stef Bos, Ericeira and Hier (Here); the latter became a considerable success. The collaboration with Bos, who is also very active in South Africa, was continued from April 2010 onwards during the Cape Connection tour, in which singer-guitarist-accordeon-player Régis Gizavo took part as well.

In the season 2010-2011  two shows are playing in the theatres: Verdes Anos, meaning ‘young years’, a sequel to the succesful concerts of Minha Casa of Fernando Lameirinhas and his brother Antonio and Brellando in which show Fernando Lameirinhas, Riet Muylaert (known as singer-songwriter of the succesful Flamish band Jackbond) and Paul de Munnik join the stage, with the music of Jacques Brel als inspiration.

ETERNO, for Fernando the eternal cyclus of all things in live, is the title of the new album, released in September 2011 as well as the same titled concert tour of the season 2011-2012. The songs of ETERNO tell about the loss of loved ones as well as about the birth of new live, both things that happened to Fernando the past years. After more than 50 years in the business and in life, Fernando entered a new phase in his life, which you can abviously hear in his songs. With dominant themes like love and death.
